A letter to Australians and New Zealanders …

Shortly after announcing this free offer, I started receiving messages from Australian and New Zealander readers who had already purchased my book and were disappointed to miss out on these bonus recipes.

I feel terribly guilty reading such messages. Sharing my recipes here on this website without barriers, for everyone to enjoy, is at the very heart of why I love what I do.

The last few weeks since Dinner hit the stores in Australia has been a whirlwind. Here’s what’s been happening!

(And here’s my ongoing full Australian book-tour schedule here.)

At the Kinokuniya bookstore book talk and signing event

“Why are all these people here?” my mother asked me, baffled, genuinely confused as she peeked out from backstage at an audience of 400.

“Well, I think they’re here for me…..?” I said, uncertainly, just as confused.

“You mean they PAID to come and hear you talk? I don’t understand. YOU?” she said, brows furrowed in total disbelief.

I wish I had captured that conversation on camera!! Because it’s funny – if anyone else had said it, it would be deemed downright insulting 😂 – and also because it perfectly captures my bewilderment as we pound the pavement for the cookbook publicity tour in Australia.

At the Dymocks cocktail party / book talk that took place on Wednesday 28th October 2022.

You see, this office-gal turned food blogger has been hiding behind a keyboard all these years. Being in front of a camera is definitely not my comfort zone. I have no desire to be “famous” (whatever that means these days!), to be recognised in public, to be on TV or in glossy magazines.

But on the other hand, the nervousness of public speaking is immediately forgotten when I see the first friendly face. The moment someone says hi and we start chatting food, BOOM! It’s like – well, it IS – chatting to a friend. It’s fun! It’s the best part, meeting so many wonderful people, having a laugh and hearing stories.

And there’s no better way for me to share with you what it’s been like than to show you. Welcome to the RecipeTin Cookbook Tour Home Movies!

Cookbook Tour Home Video!

Here’s a list of the events featured in my little home video:

  • Visiting Warringah Mall, my closest mall, on book release day to see my cookbook for sale in stores!

  • Kinokuniya book talk and signing that took place in the city, Dozer and my first public event!

  • Big W book signing – a public event that anyone could attend. I was so worried about people not turning up that I brought cookies and brownies to entice people! That, plus Dozer, worked. I was determined to stay until I met the last person in the queue. It took about 5 1/2 hours!

  • Cocktail party at Dymocks bookstore in Sydney city – Catered by my team (with a tiny little bit of help from me 😂). There were bubbles and nibbles and Dozer, chatting and book signing. It was fabulous fun! (Other than blowing the power in the store when we plugged in 3 deep fryers we brought in to cook arancini balls and spring rolls!!)

In addition to the above, I’ve been doing some little impromptu signings at some independent book stores across Sydney, both during the week and on weekends. I do like these small signings – more time to chat!!


TV!

Yes, Dozer has been on TV. Check that off his my bucket list!! 😂

Here he is with me on Studio 10 (a morning show on Channel 10) for a cooking demo, where I did the 12 hour lamb shoulder. (Watch it online here, or here on Facebook!)

Not even I have a chef hat…. how did Dozer manage to score one??

And here I am on Sunrise, another breakfast show on Channel 7 (watch it online here, or here on Facebook). Dozer wasn’t invited to this one – too complicated. He definitely does add an element of complexity to things he attends!!! 😂

For Sunrise, I did a demo of the Korean BBQ Beef Ribs, a cookbook exclusive recipe. Let’s just say it was quite a hit with the crew…. apparently most cooking guests do no-cook things like salads. Me, I insisted on making something statement!!!

With all these flattering things the media are saying about me, I know you must be rather concerned about how big my head is growing…… Ha ha ha!!!

But never fear. My people – my team and my family – have always and will always do an excellent job to keep my head from getting too big. Case in point – the conversation with my mother at the top of this post. Ruthless! 😂

As for sales…..?

I thought long and hard about whether to go public with how the book sales are going since it hit the shelves on 11 October 2022. On one hand, it feels boastful (spoiler alert) and is irrelevant to anyone without a vested or commercial interest in Dinner.

But on the other hand, I feel like you’ve been with me on this journey since the day I shared that I had decided to do a cookbook. And not telling you feels like leaving out a chunk of the story.

So I decided to share.

According to my publisher, Dinner is:

  • The fastest selling cookbook on record in Australian history

  • The fastest selling book in Australian history for a debut author (ie all types of books)

  • The biggest first week release of 2022

I’ve read these words in emails and heard them said to me. But that is the first time I’ve written those words myself and I think the significance just hit me. I’m a little overwhelmed and still trying to digest it.

PS In case you are wondering, I can’t share actual sales numbers because of confidentiality reasons but they are recorded in a subscription service used by the publishing industry called Nelson BookScan. Today is a big day.

It’s the day my cookbook is finally released in stores across Australia and New Zealand. Let me just write that again so I believe it myself. A cookbook I wrote and photographed is selling in actual real shops!

And I honestly can’t think of a better way to celebrate this milestone day with you than by announcing that my cookbook is now available for pre-order in Canada and America!!!! (I am digging deep to stop myself from running exclamation marks across the whole row 😂).

To readers in other countries, please bear with me. I have a publisher in the UK pounding the publishing-pavement for Europe and other countries around the world!

At the flagship Dymocks bookstore in Sydney with a stack of cookbooks I signed earlier this afternoon!

The challenge of going global

I’ve been pretty open about how disappointed I was that I wasn’t able to announce my cookbook would be available worldwide when pre-orders became first available in Australia in August 2022.

I feel like we’ve been on this cookbook making journey together since the beginning as I shared my ups and downs, the excitement and rough patches. So I really wanted to celebrate with readers everywhere by launching it globally!

But alas, it was not to be. Unfortunately there are unprecedented challenges facing the publishing world globally at present, partially due to the pandemic. For instance there are paper shortages – literally, the paper books are printed on. And printers are scarce – America is apparently down to its last onshore book printing house.

Consequently, securing international publishing contracts in time to make Dinner available at the same time overseas as in Australia just wasn’t feasible.

As a result of Dinner will be made available overseas progressively. The US and Canada is first cab off the rank. But availability in more countries will follow, I promise!!

Why pre-order Dinner?

There’s a few reasons to pre-order!!!

  1. To secure a copy: Imagine if it sells out…. and that did actually happen on Amazon Australia. 😳 But there’s plenty in stock now – phew!

  3. When will I receive my cookbook? 21st February 2023. So far away, I know! But your patience will be rewarded with a special free gift … ☺️ To be announced soon!

  4. What other countries is your cookbook available in? Dinner is now available in stores across Australia and NZ as well as online. Stay tuned for release in more countries … I promise the wheels are turning!!

  5. Wait… is the cover different?? Yes! Well picked. ☺️ The cover for the US edition is ever so slightly different as my publisher Countryman Press (an imprint of W.W. Norton) felt it was better suited to the American market. There was never any question about Dozer remaining on the cover though! Actually, there were some cover iterations where he was even MORE prominent!!

  6. Are the recipes the same? Yes! The same recipes are contained in the Australian/NZ edition as the US/Canada edition.

  7. Are the recipes converted into imperial measurements? Yes they are. Measurements are in cups, ounces (weight and fluid), pounds and inches, instead of grams, ml and kg (which is used in the Australian edition).

    I know this will not suit all Canadian readers and I am sorry. However, including both imperial and metric would make the ingredients very cluttered, to the point that I felt it compromised readability. So I made the tough decision to include only imperial measurements. The result is a more streamlined design which I really love!

    However, it is worth noting that most measurements are in cups, tablespoons and teaspoons and a conversion chart has been included in the book.

    In addition to measurements, ingredients have been renamed as appropriate. For example, cilantro rather than coriander, bell peppers instead of capsicum. Also, ingredient accessibility has been considered.

Oh look, here I am. Proof reading the American/Canadian edition. You know it’s my favourite task… not!😂 Give me a pile of dishes any day!

As mentioned above, getting the book out internationally has been somewhat of a challenge! And it’s been a hard slog to “Americanise” the cookbook – so many more changes than I expected.

For me personally with almost half this websites’ readership based in North America, today is a big day being able to share that pre-orders are now available in the US and Canada!

Life of Dozer

Life of Dozer is going to be rather exciting in the coming weeks as he joins me for book tour and media events!! He’s even been invited to join me on a TV show next week. This should be interesting. I see….Dozer running wild among very, very expensive TV cameras. It will be chaotic. It will be hilarious. And I will share updates!

Here we are, earlier today at Big W in Warringah Mall, the closest large mall to my home, doing som publicity. We’ll be back here next Saturday 22nd October 2022 for a book signing. Come along!
